I laughed, I cried, I smiled, and then I wondered, "is that a commie tank?" Life in Canada is so mixed up, I don't know what is up and down, thanks to these damned "human rights".
I would love to see the day when it is known as the Americas from Mexico to Canada and we join hands and make our hard work and natural resources put us back in the top place in the world order. I do have a little trouble with that French bunch in Quebec but mostly I think we all have the dream of living a full life and enjoy where we are and what we do. How can anyone not think Free Speech is the right way. Oh, you are right the Muslims don't think that way. MUD
That is the exact kind of comment that could alienate Canadians from Newfoundland to British Columbia from the Free Speech movement.
When I was in the United States (in a very Democrat town), I got sick and tired of American fantasies about invading Canada, or jokes that Canada was the 51st state, claims that we are "allowed" our sovreignity on sufferance and even the taunt "when was the last time a Canadian died for his country?" (My answer, "Last week in Afghanistan.")
Wm. Lyon Mackenzie admired the American system very much, and he wanted to reform the goverance on Ontario on American lines, but he didn't ask Americans to invade.
We won the Battle of Vimy Ridge, so we have shown ourselves to be brave and effective fighters for freedom. Although I am grateful for the support of so many in the USA, Canadians really shouldn't play into Manifest Destiny and Monroe Doctrine fantasies.
Meanwhile, my Canada includes 'that French bunch in Quebec.'
Now that I've erased all my comments about Manifest Destiny, all my comments about those folks who..., and so on, I'll say that if there's anything left of that photo by now I'm stealing some of it too.
It was a whimsical cartoon used to make a powerful statement. Droning bulby, a member of the humourless left, simply doesn't understand the mixing of humour and debate. There's nothing funny in lefty land! And can you blame them? (And MUD, respectfully, I decline your offer.)
Hey, I'm a jokey person. But Freedom of Speech in Canada is not just a "conservative" thing; it's an everybody thing (even the Globe and Mail is on board this weekend-yay!), and the opinion-makers in eastern Canada and BC tend to be liberals.
Frankly, it's fantastic that the conservatives and liberals (with some obvious exceptions) are banding together against the HRCs. It's rare, it's beautiful, and I'd hate to see it get messed up.
One way to really scare a liberal is with the idea of American invasion. A vast number of Canadians (most?) were against the invasion of Iraq, for example, although a vast number (most?) were all for bombing the stuffing out of the Taliban after 9/11.
Canadians don't like jokes about being invaded any more than Americans like jokes about being invaded. And gosh darn it, after decades of being afraid Quebec was going to succeed, I am a little thin-skinned about sovreignity myself. Here's a lovely link:
ss, your Canada includes a lot of America bashers, as well. Just another form of bigotry, IMHO. I think you might have been listening/viewing CBC for too long.
I'm 5th generation Canajan. I love Americans. If I had any say, I'd offer them free fresh water as a tiny thank-you for having them as concerned neighbours. Without them we'd have been taken over long ago.
When Americans visit our house, we fly the Stars and Stripes. Dessert is normally Apple Pie.
Given a chance by choice God will bless America.
Ditto, Canada. Ditto, any other.
Maybe a double trinity of wings clipped would help before somebody spray-paints them red, white, and blue.;-)
As an American, I find this an interesting thread re the sensitivity concerning the idea of America militarily invading Canada.
Given that the US/Canadian border is (I believe) the longest unmilitarized border in the world, and I can't think of a case where 2 true democracies ever fought a war (I don't consider the Iceland/UK cod war a war), how can anyone take such a concept as something not so abstract as to render it meaningless?
Now cultural invasion is a different matter, but that involves a significant element of free will on the part of Canadians...
(I have donated to the Free Speech 5, anyone who champions free speech deserves support regardless of politics.)
Thank you and Canada for starting and publicizing the fight to reverse the restrictions on free speech in the West (both government and street-mob imposed) that have occurred over the last 2 decades.
Hope you come up with a t-shirt that engages uninformed Americans when worn by an American in America. (Not sure an auto club spoof would work.)
In Canada, saying the wrong thing even in jest can drag you through Star Chamber tribunals and commissions without the benefit of due process, can bankrupt you, destroy your career and your family, result in lifetime bans on free speech and expression (of the Gospel, no less) and ultimately even lead to imprisonment. Freedom of speech and expression, freedom to practice religion as we choose, are guaranteed by our constitution.
Blazingcatfur is "Poisonous". ... It's not "right wing" - it's pro-war, pro-U.S., virulently Islamophobic, McCarthyite - and that's just after 3 minutes of reading the front page...
Phrillie, how did you happen on that blog? It is truly repulsive.

I love it! Of course, my drawings turn out that way even when I'm trying to be artistic.
Great to get a smile in the midst of all this.
Glad you like it;)
May I steal your picture and put it on my blog with a link back to you?
I love it!

Hmmm it does have a somewhat vintage Soviet profile now that I think about it.
Brilliance!
If I may, I'd like to steal it too.
Steal away!

Ah Seraph MUD means well. Besides we are turning the The Tank's graphic into a t-shirt!
No you are are not obligated to buy one if you find it disagreeable:)
My Canada includes people with a sense of humour.
I'd like to be your first customer, BCF.
Thanks Jan, I will let you know when Binks gets em ready.
Gosh, that's just ADORABLE!
And pitched at JUST the right level of readership, too. Congrats, BCF - you clearly know your readership.
Carry on, BCF. I see a few of the humourless types have come out to play, but ya can't please everybody.

Ah, sorry, I meant "Quebec was going to separate"; I utterly forget how to spell the word I'm thinking of.
Secede?
