Letter to the editor Ottawa Citizen: Censorship cry rings hollow

Re: Film, TV celebs attack 'chilling' tax credit bill, April 11.

It was amusing to see the eloquence displayed by Sarah Polley and Wendy Crewson in defending the rights of the film industry to freedom of expression. The first thought that came to mind was NIMBY (not in my backyard).

The cry of censorship rang a little hollow since the industry was nowhere to be seen as the various Human Rights Commissions across Canada have performed more censorship against thought than anything proposed in the new act.

The film industry is worried that they may not receive money to support their efforts but where were they when the Human Rights Commissions attacked freedom of speech?

Actors are trained in the exaggerated portrayal of emotions.

Not logic. Or common sense....

"exaggerated portrayal of emotions."

It seems to be an integral part of their nature, although I'm sure there are exceptions. My only romantic experience with an actor seemed like an affair for the ages, but when it was over I didn't miss her much. It was like turning off the TV.

Sarah Polley's stand on this is actually perfectly consistent. As a Communist, she can believe in state-sponsored arts programs while not being in the least bothered by state censorship of speech. Especially if that speech is somebody else's. . .

Good points all. I believe she is a Trotskyite, now why I just don't know.
