If we are going to condemn terrorists for denying our common humanity, can we in turn deny it to them? By doing the hard work of humanizing them, by locating their hateful ideology as a corruption of some universal human desire for the sacred and reciprocity, we can hope to understand them in a way they can never understand us.

But there is a quick and easy satisfaction in just hating your enemy to the point of killing him. Yet if the human love that is the deferral of that easy satisfaction were not stronger in the long run, how would the human race have ever gotten to this point in history without dying out?

We may see that even the Khadrs' willingness to sacrifice their child by turning him into an agent of bin Laden's war is part of a strategy by which their still essentially tribal "umma" culture keeps itself alive and keeps control of its own young men. Sacrificial violence can help defer a greater violence.

We then may take an interest in superior ways of building order by deferring ever more of our dependence on sacrificial violence. The history of Judeo-Christianity and self-ruling nations, for example, is all about this.

In recognizing Khadr's humanity we may thus begin to lay the ground not for cultural relativism but for a higher truth, one for which Canada once stood (and many died fighting to defend) if we have the faith and courage that this will not make us weak-kneed and likely losers of the larger historical struggle. But we have lost our faith and become cowardly relativists. This is the first step back to becoming a violent tribalist who positively needs human sacrifice. What will be the left's next step?

Anonymous said...: Excellent article. The WSJ is an island of sanity in an MSM sea of increasing mediocrity and irrelevance. So why do liberals have such a hard time understanding the mindset of people who want to kill them? It's incomprehensible to me.

As for me, when it comes to terrorist scumbags who want to destroy my life and my way of life, the only relevant philosophy is to kill the bastards. End of story. Think of terrorists as clumps of cells if such a philosophy shocks and appalls you.; 2:11 PM

I'm serious, if his leftarded supporters want him brought back fine but I demand that the Harper government allow the Canadian Military to try him for treason and if found guilty he'll hang from a rope. Perhaps the self same rope the Taliban used to hang innocent gay people. Or we could stone him with stones that have been used to stone Muslim woman who's only crime was being raped or being choke inmodest. Or we could just catipult him off Cape Smokey like the Taliban do when Muslims are deemed not "Muslim enough". Or we could just dismember him on TV like the Taliban do and chant Allah Akbar like those that support terrorist chant. He's guilty by association of all the above crimes.

He was in Afghanistan to force the most vile form of Islam on the Afghani people using terrorism as a weapon to control the people.

Canada gave Daddy Dearest a Disablity pension for a bad back and he used that money to go to the ME and spread the Taliban's version of Islam, by extension the Liberal government could be accused of funding terrorism could it not?? The left demanded that we repatriate Daddy and then gave hima a cripple pension so he could travel to the ME and kill and maim others in the name of Allah.
