Ezra on Harper and The CJC
It is my hope that giving the Saul Hayes Award to Harper – who has publicly criticized human rights commissions and their censorship as "egregious" and "abusive" – will remind the CJC of Hayes' commitment to free speech, and perhaps lead the CJC back to his good example.
Frankly, the award itself needs Harper's rehabilitation. The last recipient was Richard Warman, the former human rights investigator who was recently found by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal to have published many vicious anti-Semitic comments on neo-Nazi websites in a misguided attempt to entrap other "haters." Hayes would be beside himself.

Meanwhile, a majority Con gov. in Alberta VOTES DOWN an opposition amendment that would strip section 3 from its Human Rights code.
What does failure taste like, BCF? I've never tried it before.
It seems to me that Ezra Levant is re-thinking his hyper criticism of Canadian Jewish Congress. In writing this article he acknowledges the importance of CJC to the Jewish community. And he does it for the first time in an elegant way.
Instead of vitriol there is reasoned argument; instead of name-calling there is praise where it is due and constructive criticism where appropriate.
One small correction to the historical record, the venerable Saul Hayes was in fact the absolute motivator behind Canada's decision to establish the Maxwell Cohen commission on hate laws. It was in fact Mr. Hayes that did insist on the truth of defense something that CJC has supported in all its legal interventions dealing with Section 319.
This has got to be the first time Ezra Levant has written a rather commendatory editorial about CJC. Is he turning over a new leaf?
One quibble, Ezra fudges a bit trying to distance Harper from CJC. The real truth, as was seen in Harper's interview with MacLeans magazine, is that he supports Section 13 of the CHRA. Like CJC and B'nai Brith he wants some important changes and safegaurds. The fact Harper has not moved to rescind is proof positive of that.
But its a small thing given Ezra's welcome entry into adulthood with this thoughtful aricle.
In Alberta Liberals don't run in their own party if they want to get elected -- they join the PC party. Which tells you everything you need to know about how Stelmach operates.
I'm voting Wildrose in the next election.
Keep dreaming girls.
Well blow me over with a feather!!! Ezra showing deference to the Canadian Jewish Congress?
Not that it isn't deserving:

I can't think of many organizations that are able to attract all four Federal Leaders to the same convention in the same day.
We must be reading very different articles.
Well I guess for Ezra this is considered progress. The fact he can get through an entire article without once calling someone a name suggests that he has either been well edited or he is undergoing therapy.
I'm laughing my butt off, Ezra read the comments here and wonders as do I what article it is your reading.
Right, so time to put out a call to "Levant's Lapdogs" to come on over to BCF's site abd back up their Messiah. Hell we can't have anyone thinking that Ezra would ever be respectful to as he (and those from Stormfront) call the "official Jews" now can we?
Mitka, Bernie has done nothing to merit respect.
After reading the article, I don't get the "Ezra is being nice to the CJC" comments here. Must be the global warming, or maybe just seeing the Star banner makes people all warm and fuzzy.
"What does failure taste like...?"
ask yourself, bcl. you're spanked regularly by Steyn et al.
at any rate, as an Albertan, let me assure everyone, our effete Conservatives are not conservative.

yeah, i'm voting Wildrose too. i just wish Ted Morton would run. he has a real sense for property rights, free speech and gun rights. as close as one can come to libertarianism.
..but, i do believe Danielle Smith is going to run. that would be excellent.
Well BCF seems like the sold-out crowd coming from across Canada to the CJC plenary disagree.
Meaning what exactly Mitka? Nothing, that's what - like all your arguments.
Right, look I understand. After all this time of believing the CJC is not held in high esteem, this successful convention being lauded by media and government leaders must come as quite a shock. But for us in the mainstream it was expected.
So keep on believing your own BS BCF. BTW will you be amongst the sold-out crowd at the plenary tomorrow?
People always want to meet the PM Mitka, lord knows even Ignatieff, trust me they aren't there for Bernie - by the way that was a pretty expensive ad campaign they ran on CFRB to sell tickets to this thing.
You mean those public service announcements I heard.
So hawking tickets constitutes a public service announcement - sure Mitka sure;)
BCF, before you embarass yourself even more why don't you call CJC or CFRB and ask. Then come back and apologize
Mitka you are an idiot.
Had to leave early from CJC plenary but heard the Prime Minister support Canada's anti-hate laws and the work of CJC on this issue.
His speech was strong and fully supportive of the Jewish state of Israel. A great day !
Mitka I will believe his stance on the Section 13 (1) when I read a transcript of his remarks. That he would support Israel isn't a surprise - we all do.
I stayed for the entire plenary. It was my first time and it was very impressive. You couldn't fit another body in the room.
And yes the PM sure did speak on the human rights agenda. He noted the important work of CJC in developing hate laws that balanced both the importance of free speech with the need to protect society from hatred. It was an amazing day. Also heard Jack Layton (who was so so and Michael ignatieff who was terrific.
Sue the CJC lobbied for an anti-democratic law that has been abused by compalainants. You know that or should if you don't by now. Section 13 (1) has been dangerously stetched by both the CHRC and the CHRT.
As I said I will wait for a transcript of the PM's remarks. At no time will I rely on CJC trolls;)
Seems Ezra has posted the PM's remarks - he is sounding more like a Free-Speecher everyday.
Sorry CJC'er's it just isn't your day;)
Of course the terrorist sympathizers remove my truthful comment! Disgusting!
