Update: Given the the magnificent drubbing Susan G. Cole of NOW Magazine has taken in the comments over her bigotted screed I thought I'd bump this piece and encourage readers to send her a bit more love. PS. Get a load of the graphic (below) Ms. Cole used to identify Ezra as a money grubbin Jew.
Perhaps the most unbelievably stupid piece ever written on the subjects of human rights commissions and Ezra Levant, surpassing even Pearl "Texas Cage Match" Eliadis and Mary "Wooefully ill-Informed" Sims for sheer depth and breadth of ignorant opinion.

Hah, his performance at the International Book Festival Q&As was among the best that I have seen in terms addressing various competing interests and opinions.
Ezra and Steyn et al., are not perfect but they do appear to have the ability and wisdom to capture the imagination (and animosity) of many, many people.
Consider the source - probably the most enthusiastic supporter of official censorship on the looney left. Frankly, it's almost an endorsement, in a perverse way.

When the 'Danish cartoon' controversy was at its hottest, I spend a couple of hours discussing this with a devout Muslim, who had recently arrived in Canada from Somalia.
He was - and still is - a very devout Muslim: wears the Muslim style of clothing, with the pill-box hat and never-shaved beard, and so on. I mention this because I think it important to explain his background.
I was giving him a lift, when the topic came up. He was outraged, furious, and all that. So, I talked to him.
Actually looked past the exterior image he presented, and talked to him like an intelligent human being: and, he WAS very intelligent. I asked if I could explain to him - without making a judgment of whether the 'cartoons' were OK - just explain to him the REASONS WHY some people thought that publishing those cartoons was not only OK, but actually very, very important thing to do - even IF it insulted his religion.
We talked for hours.
When he walked away, he said he would never have believed he would say this, but that he agreed that it WAS important that these cartoons were published.
So, if a man who has only recently come to Canada, was unfamiliar with our history and culture, struggled with English, and who had considered the cartoons to have been a direct insult to him as a Muslim: if HE can understand - truly understand - that publishing them was not only OK, but needed - how come these people still do not understand???
Honestly, I do not think they are saying these things out of malice or calculation. I think they TRULY do NOT understand.
So, what do we do?
I would argue that people like Cole do misrepresent the issue out of malice and calculation.
Cole wrote that Levant could have brought up the cartoons differently.
Well, NOW could also advertise teenage hookers less graphically.
But THAT would be censorship, I guess...

My entire family immigrated to Canada from the Ukraine. My grandparents, parents all spoke not one word of english. They got a hand shake and a can of sardines when they arrived.

Actually, I think Muslim Lookout has a point, not that she sees it: it is NOT a privilege to be given years of state-funded education, and to be encouraged by the CBC, that teaches you to see the world and all of history in terms of a complex conspiracy theory, to come to understand our humanity, and how culture is generated, in terms of the Nietzschean will to power. One reason there are fewer and fewer straight white males in the university is that they often learn more quickly how the world of culture is ultimately independent, the product of free exchange, serving a common purpose, and not in the hands of anyone or any specific interest. Thus Muslim Lookout can't see very well what she is doing, but others can. She has obviously had a lot of "schooling"; sad to say that's not much of a privilege anymore. I'd be angry too.
She is also right that, to borrow a silly term, "Islamophobia" is energizing much of this debate, but she seems blind to the reasons for this. In any case, I would like just once for the Islamophobiaphobics to actually admit that many who champion the expansion of Islam have taken much comfort or encouragement from Steyn's writings and that the piece for which he was sent to the BCHRT is actually far more critical of modern secular white Europeans than Muslims. Steyn portrays the death of a culturally Western Europe as inevitable, which it is not.

Having actually read 'Shakedown', I'm instantly more credible than Sobia on Muslim Lookout. My opinion is Levant and Steyn are heros whose brave work will be remembered for years to come.

Of course, that would never happen, as the liberal left don't rat on their own, and those on the right who favor free speech and public debate would never consider using a 'Hijacked Rights Commission' to silence dissent.

This woman certainly has some strange, extreme opinions. It is doubtful that many people are listening, and if they happen to come across any of her rants, they really do not take them seriously. Personally, I wish she would keep her stupid opinions to herself, but I am not going to lose any sleep over it when she opts to express them publicly.
Picturing a Jew that way is like showing a black person eating watermelon and fried chicken. Everybody gets the connection.
And the indiscretion is compounded by the fact that Cole never makes the assertion that Levant made money from the ordeal - indeed she states the opposite.
Thus we are left wondering why Levant is pictured as a money grubber, and there really is only one conclusion - he's shown that way cause he's Jewish.

OK - Levant is too principled to file a complaint with the HRCs for this 'cartoon', but... anyone can file, right???
