Jay Currie dumps Conservatives to work for Liberal Hopeful
It seems pretty clear to me that the CPC has abandoned its fiscal responsibility and any sense of principle with respect to things like the repeal of s. 13.1 and the elimination of the CHRC’s censorship role. They are certainly not speaking to the issues which I think conservatives should be thinking about. So, frankly, it comes down to a choice of leader, policy having been abandoned.
As regular readers will already know, I have never had much time for Harper. But his cravenness in the face of the recession, his government’s ineptitude in protecting Canadian citizens abroad, his utter unwillingness to put a stop to the censors at the CHRC and his all round dweebiness leave me entirely unimpressed. Were he a dweeb of principle I might stick with the CPC; but he isn’t. He’s just slithering, hoping that the polls will pop another four points.
...
I won't condemn Jay for his stance, his thoughts on the CPC's inaction on Section 13 (1) echo my own. If you're going to vote for a brokerage party, it may as well be the Liberals.

I understand your frustration.
However, do you really think the Liberals will be equally bad as the Conservatives in the matters Currie refers to?
Do you think a Liberal government would not, when faced with the Steyn and Levant persecutions, be even more obstinate and arrogant even than J.Lie has been?
Do you think a Lib government would have withdrawn from the `anti-racism' conference this year, out of principle?
do you think Lieb government would have come out as strongly in support of Israel as has the Harper government (although I'm not certain you care about this issue...)
do you think the Liberals would have refused to sign the so-called Aboriginal Rights treaty?
do you think the Libs would even be contemplating reforming the broken refugee system...
the list could go on but I think I've made my point.
Stephen Harper must gain at least a plurality of votes in order to stay in office: tackling issues such as the abolition of the HRC in a minority situation would have meant certain death for the CPC government, you know, I know, Jay Currie should know it.
don't you remember the `secret agenda'?
Maybe, but I would rather die a Lion than live as a dog.
I don't care how disillusioned you are with Harper. Iggy is NOT the answer.
I agree Iggy is not the answer. He isn't even the question. But I understand Jay's frustration.
But, Jay is in the land without a view - the Mountains, lots of ferries and A History of BC Bud, SC and odd parties now wanting equalization.
Think even Dr. Foth called BC the "Far West".
Me, I am voting MARXIST or GREEN so I can get a hold of the Voting and membership list.
E. May has left NS and is apparently running somewhere in the inlets. Do they have trains?
The intelligence chatter suggests a previous 4 time Green loser is also trying to get a seat?
And to todays topic about freedom of sppech:

Only gets better Billy Bob from here on in.
I'm with scaramouche. It's still a relatively free country -- vote for whomever you want. Just don't try to get me to jump on that bandwagon.
I will NEVER vote for the Adscam Party -- ever! Actually, I've pretty much made up my mind that I won't be voting in the next federal election. And I've never missed voting once since turning 18.
Now, if Jason Kenney was heading up the Conservatives, I would definitely be voting. I would love to see him as PM.
Agreed Natasha.
I agree with LS from The Only Province That Counts. BC has always been a bit too close to the fault line for its own good, not like us flatlanders. Kind of shaky and unpredictable, they are.
I've really got no choice but to vote Cons again because the others are all so much worse. My hunch is that all of these so far unaddressed issues will be part of the CPC platform in the next election. Either that, or they will, like all democratic governments before them, save it for the last months prior to the election call. Any government will do the same thing. It's a tried and true pattern: 1st year, initiate a few of the promises, 2nd/3rd year put everything on the back burner, last year implement some of the remaining items in order to improve your standing in the polls and keep the remainder to use as campaign promises, sort of like a carrot on a stick: "If you want us to finish this, then you'll have to give us another mandate." I've seen it many, many times. It's as predictable at the sunrise or the phases of the moon.
I like what Harper is doing in the Senate. About time the Cons got a chance to create a more equitable mix in that institution and the more he can appoint before the writ is dropped, the better. It's only then that the real change can come about.
*Maybe, but I would rather die a Lion than live as a dog.*
I don't know what sense that makes... you'd rather actively work for a party that you know stands against every thing you stand for?
Heh, even I'm confused, RB, but what it boils down to is that there is very little to choose between them.
The Liberals have drifted too far left for me. Ignatieff is more centre than many in his party. he has to prove to me that he can prevail against that left. Today's Conservatives have taken over the centre.
I left the Liberal Party because of its legislation against the individual and their culture of entitlement for themselves, for CUPE and for the Teachers unions who think they run the country.
Seventy percent of Toronto lawyers are Liberals because they get more money from them for litigation. Mny Liberal laws are created for and of benfit to lawyers. We are not a fearsome party now. Our program must be incremental to get our legislation passed in a minority.
I have often been discouraged by the lack of action on the HRC's but success on this file may require the time and place and position to carry the day.
I'm stunned!!! It was only a few months ago the Liberals, NDP with the Sepratests tryed to bring down a legaly voted new government. To bring about a Coup like any old Banana Republic. The same charcters who where the thieves of ab-scam & all the other Liberal thievery. There still there!!!
People will vote for these crooks yet again!!!
This Country deserves to die!
Jay Currie can have his opinions. Indeed its his right! But please spare me hearing the thieving fox's have changed the game plan.
Entitlement, Power to promote Statism, stealing tax monies for themselves from producers like the good little socialists they are.
The truth is we have no one who stands for the middle class. Producers & buisness anymore.
JMO.
Vote for Iggy and you may end up with another coalition with Layton, once you have a minority Iggy government it would be impossible to vote it down as the Bloc and Layton will prop him up, with all sorts of backroom secret deals.
