A Re-Evaluation of Holocaust Commemorations: The 10 Lessons That We Should Have Learned

By Howard Rotberg whom I suspect does not see eye to eye with Burny Farber.

....

Recently, I watched a fine series on the Holocaust by the American network, Public Broadcasting System. As part of the series, they assembled a group of high school students who not only watched the series’ episodes, but went on a trip to tour Auschwitz. Then, at the end of the series, the students were filmed, discussing what they had learned. One young man, quite typical of the rest, was clear that he had learned that we must all be free of “discrimination” and “racism”, and he vowed to be more welcoming to Muslim immigrants.

So it was made clear to the viewer. The Holocaust now stands for the principle of being tolerant and non-discriminatory. We, of course, are now entering the end-game of those who have quite successfully hijacked the moral of the Holocaust story. In a world of moral and cultural relativism, where “tolerance” is the only enduring value, we Jews are participating in a fraudulent and reprehensible misuse of History – a misuse which results in the new villains being precisely those who adopt religious values to judge human behaviour, and seek to discriminate between good and evil, and the new heroes being Muslim victims of criticism...

For it is my argument that Holocaust commemoration has been willingly subverted by well-meaning liberal Jews into a movement to deny Jewish values in favour of the new relativist and tolerant values that are weakening the Western World’s resolve to defend itself and its freedoms against the forces of Islamofascism.

Say Hello to Generation A - As in A for Abandoned

According to the Ontario Ministry of Education policies, if a student misses a test (whether they skip class or are sick) or if they cheat then the evaluation is not valid and they must not be given a zero. The student must have an opportunity to be re-evaluated on the material. Assignments can have a due date but if the student does not hand it in on the due date a zero cannot be assigned. The student must be allowed to hand in the assignment late without being penalized.

Ezra Levant: Zionist Word-butcher & German Hater - by Arthur Topham

Does anyone really, I mean really, believe we have anything to fear from Basement Nazis like this? This piece by Arthur Topham reads like the Onion wrote it. Do note that author Arthur is currently in the process of being convicted by the CHRC. Yes we will all sleep better when the scourge of Basement Nazism is layed to rest, but wouldn't it be cheaper to simply issue a court order that Arthur must take his meds?.

If I were the CJC or B'nai Brith - who I believe are behind Arthur's CHRC difficulties, I'd be more concerned at the "tone" of comments appearing in this Globe article today.

I'll give AT credit for digging up this memorable Macleans Issue, "I was a Teenaged Nazi for the CJC".

According to Dr Aidan Rankin, “anti-Fascism” is the new Fascism. The so-called anti-racists and Multiculturalists are aggressors with totalitarian leanings; the people they unfairly attack are victims of a failed social experiment and one of the greatest betrayals in history...

Speaking of which - Well Hello to you Both as well;)

Has anyone else had their Facebook Account Suspended?

I found out mine was recently, apparently I have somehow violated the terms of use policy - How I can't say as I have never been an active "Facebook" user - I signed on in order to join various groups hosted there as a means to lend support. That's the extent of my participation, I don't publish or contact anyone as a rule save for a handful of communications between friends.

Given that their support site has a seperate category for people who suspect their account has been suspended by mistake I believe this is an all too common occurence. So far no reply from Facebook support however, no biggy I was hardly ever there, just curious if anyone else has run into this.

Why Israel is a good country in a bad neighbourhood

Or are Globe & Mail commentors a bad neigbourhood?

...Let there be no mistake, you come into my house and destroy everything, you bomb my neighbors and kill my family and I will KILL YOU. This is not a threat, this is a certainty. You sow what you reap and I have no sympathy for the aparthied state of Israel or your facist youth wearing t-shirts with "disturbing images". I can just imagine. Depraved. Reap what you sow, lay down in the fire. Now let's see if my comment will make it through G&M filtres, because our government and media owners (all five of them) bow down before Israel and place higher value on loyalty to Israel than they do on their own country, which is why they feel the need to constantly repress Canadians' true feelings on that parriah country that would be nothing more than a dust-bowl piece of filth if it weren't for U.S. welfare and military "aid". What a pathetic disgrace.
...

At the time of this post not a single supportive comment. There are days when supporting Israel brings to mind Whittiker Chambers - ''I know that I am leaving the winning side for the losing side.''

The next step in "criminal law through the back door"

Covenant Zone brings this scary development to our attention.

...Canada has no constitutional guarantee of property rights, and, I have been informed, our courts have historically been reticent to interpret our Charter right to "life, liberty and security of the person" as conveying a right to protect property from government seizure or expropriation in various situations.

Some will see these civil forfeiture laws as targeting criminals and thus not being of general concern. But I fear this is indicative of an unhealthy reliance in our culture on the arts of holding up somewhat arbitrarily-chosen scapegoats to assuage people's resentments with the evils of our world.

The CJC and Nazis? What a world! Ezra blasts Burny Farber and the CJC in todays Ottawa Citizen

...Which brings us to the present day -- and back to Rabbi Bulka and the section 13 censorship law. Canada's largest customer of section 13 is Richard Warman, who has been the complainant in all but two cases heard by the tribunal this decade. The CJC was so impressed that they gave Warman an award.

But, in a stunning human rights tribunal ruling last month, Warman himself was rebuked for posting anti-Semitic comments on Stormfront, a neo-Nazi website, including a message calling Jews "scum." Warman has stated that he was attempting to gather information on real Nazis, but the tribunal called his actions "disappointing and disturbing," and ruled that he risked encouraging more hateful messages himself.

Warman's actions appalled the tribunal, but apparently not the CJC. Just as the CJC did with Garrity, Nazi opponents continue to stir up neo-Nazi incidents -- as if there aren't enough real threats to Jews as it is.

Ihsanoglu has boasted how the riots that erupted in Europe after the publication of Danish cartoons about the Prophet Mohammed were “a clear message to the West regarding the red lines that should not be crossed.” The West, he said, must “look seriously into the question of freedom of expression from the perspective of its inherent responsibility.” In other words, “freedom of speech stops when dealing with Islam,”

An excellent summation of Durban II.

Canadian Arab Federation - International community duped by Canadian Government, Racist Canada mean to immigrants

Canadian Arab Federation’s statement at the Durban Review Conference - Geneva.

Thank you Madame Chair,

The Canadian Arab Federation is an umbrella Infidel Hating Jew-Baiting organization that represents almost 30 Arab Canadian groups across Canada. Since 1967 the Canadian Arab Federation has been the political voice for the Arab anti-semitic middle-eastern community in Canada.

Today the Arab community is under siege and is increasingly marginalized Jason Kenney won't give us Free Money. The already existing and rampant racism against Arabs and Muslims made up claims of racism, was only exasperated after 9/11, when we actually gave them a reason to regard us with something less than multiculti love. The legislative measures and xenophobic public discourse resulted in an alarming erosion of the rights and civil liberties of the Arab community which led to abuse and shocking crimes like those committed against Arab Canadians Maher Arar, Abdullah Almalki and currently Abousfian Abdelrazik. These men were tortured and jailed following information shared and sent by Canadian security officials. This type of institutionalized racism and its pernicious effects has now resulted in the Arab community in Canada having the highest unemployment rate amongst immigrants despite having high levels of education Those damn Canadians insist that we adopt their filthy infidel ways!. Furthermore, 1 in every 3 Arab Canadian children live under the poverty line.

Members of these Arab groups move to Canada in the hopes of enhancing their economic situation and, more importantly, to live in a democratic state which allows them to express their views and participate fully in the new society to use existing laws to undermine Canadian society and institute Sharia. This hope seems more and more betrayed. The capacity of contributing as a citizen is now limited as a member of the Arab Canadian community. Fundraising initiatives in charitable organizations for Hamas and Hizbollah are limited for fear of being accused of contributing to terrorist organizations.

The fundamental right of freedom of expression in a democracy seems to have been taken away from Arab organizations, They won't let us chant kill the Jews! The recent attack of Stephen Harper against the Canadian Arab Federation was an attempt to muzzle our voice; funding to our organization was cut because we were critical of the unconditional support by the Canadian government for Israel during the massacre of Palestinian children and women in Gaza, They won't give us free money to chant Jewish Child you are gonna F&CKIN Die at our rallies.

In Article 10 of the declaration of the Durban review conference, the international community clearly denounced any legislative measures, policy and practices based on racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and other forms of intolerance that are incompatible with democracy, transparency and accountability. Treatment inflicted on the Canadian Arab Federation is an eloquent example of this type of abuse We'll lie through our teeth because we know Idiot Liberals will cut their own throats in our defense Ha Ha.

Madame Chair, the fact the Canadian government. refuses to participate in this conference is a clear result of its incapacity to defend the deplorable situation faced by the First Nations, racial minorities and Arabs and Muslims in Canada support us in our Jew Baiting efforts.

Finally, the international community cannot be duped by the Canadian government’s discourse of multiculturalism and inclusion when we know that behind such discourse is the reality of inequity and social injustice against many communities including the Arab community.

-Mohamed "Jethro" Boudjenane, Executive Director of the Canadian Arab Federation, addresses the Durban Review conference attendees on Friday April 24, 2009.

Harold Koh and the End of Human Rights

A good smackdown that applies equally to the cultural marxists at work in the Canadian Human Rights Commission who wish to further erode Canada's sovereignty.

Given that premise, it is no wonder that, as Hathaway points out, the number of treaties that are signed do not correlate with improved human rights. Under Koh’s theory, the places that need the enforcing efforts of transnational civil society the most – that is, the world’s dictatorships – are the ones that have the least of it. On the other hand, from his point of view, Koh’s approach offers wonderful possibilities for changing the U.S., precisely because it is an open and liberal society.

Q&A: Jason Kenney on George Galloway and free speech

Q: Do you agree with the prime minister’s decision not to seek elimination of free speech prohibitions under the Human Rights Act?

A: Well, the prime minister is a well-known advocate of freedom of speech, he led by example as president of a national citizen’s coalition in that respect, and I have no reason to believe that’s changed. It’s a matter of record that our party convention adopted essentially unanimously a motion on this matter, and that the Canadian Human Rights Commission commissioned a report of their operations in this respect, which I believe actually recommended elimination of Section 13. My understanding is the prime minister has said the government doesn’t have any intention to act on that at this point, but obviously our government takes note of those facts.
...

Well that was bit like asking when did you stop beating your wife, however Harper is a cautious man, overly so on the Section 13(1) file. The CHRC's do-over report on the Moon report which called for the elimination of 13(1) from the CHRA is due this summer - reportedly.

No action will occur until everyone has had a good laugh at Jennifer Lynch's expense.

Belonging & Banishment: Being Muslim in Canada - Book Review

Oh man I gotta get a copy of this....any book that praises Haroon Siddiqui is going to be a laugh riot.

Muslims and the Rule of Law covers the presence of Islamophobia in Canadian politics and media, discussing such high-profile cases as the Maher Arar tragedy, the ‘Shari’a court’ controversy, the infamous Maclean’s brouhaha, the disturbing Quebec “reasonable accomodations” xenophobia, and much more. Siddique did a fantastic job in analysing the coverage of these incidents in the media, and the political and social responses that were broadcast all over the country. He criticizes and refutes the popular Islamophobic arguments found both in the media, political statements and actions, and amongst the general Canadian population; effectively using Canadian law, examples of anti-hate and hate-speech incidents from Canadian history, and plain old logic to point out the many faults and inconsistencies of the Islamophobic arguments. The essay concludes with the warning that unless anti-Islam and anti-Muslim sentiments are effectively combated, the very nature of Canada’s tolerant and inclusive foundations will be destroyed.

Liberals following Canadian Human Rights Commission agenda propose implementing "Social Condition"

Very ugly news has surfaced in the LPC policy discussion document which should guarantee that the Liberals never be allowed to govern again.

I've written about the CHRC's latest efforts to implement "Social Condition" as a prohibited ground of discrimination in the CHRA here and here - it is a naked power grab which should be vigorously opposed.

What will "Social Condition" entail? Does the Sub-Prime Mortgage mess ring a bell: For instance, financial institutions may assume that all people who have low paying jobs are an unacceptable risk for a loan.

We were told during our consultations that complaints were filed with the Commission on behalf of single mothers denied mortgages because they were on welfare or could not meet minimum income requirements.

I'd say goodbye property rights but we don't have any written in our charter.

Or, an employer may impose unnecessary job requirements that deny employment to capable people who have low literacy skills as a result of their social disadvantage.

Now with the proposed inclusion of "citizenship status" one can only assume the Liberals are cultivating brave new victim class voting blocks - Can you say Gitmo Inmates for Ignatieff?

BE IT RESOLVED that the Liberal Party of Canada urge the next government to ensure that:
• the mandate of the CHRC is expanded to include type of citizenship status and socio-economic class as a ground of discrimination

See page 26 in the policy document.

The Liberals are also in lockstep with the CHRC's desire to march in time to the beat of their cultural marxist masters at the U.N.

The Libs propose:

• the CHRC be given the power to monitor the implementation of our commitments and obligations to enforce its recommendations;

This means subservience to the UN plain and simple, the goal is to do an end run around our elected officials and judiciary. I see new HRC legisaltion calling for an end to the Defamation of Islam as a main plank in the Liberals next election platform. Don't believe me? Liberals - MP Paul Szabo, MP Bonnie Crombie, and Omar Algabra attended the recent Palestine House event which hosted the anti-semitic Sheikh Akrama Sabri (Imam of Alaqsa Mosque) and Bishop Attala Hanna, attendee's were exhorted to vote Liberal as the tide had turned and the majority within the LPC now favoured the Palestinian cause over Israel.

And what else? Not a mention of notorious thought crime law Section 13 (1). And why would they? Liberals are anything but.

Your Tax Dollars and Union Dues at Work - Guess who's at Durban ll on your dime!

The Federal Government wisely decided to boycott Durban ll. That won't mean the lack of a Canadian prescence. The Canadian Arab Federation released this statement yesterday condemning the Canadian government for boycotting Durban II co-signed by a number of NGO's. A look at funding for these organizations is in order.

April 20, 2009

Canadian civil society is at the UN Durban Review Conference but Canadian Government is not.
Canadian groups at Geneva UN conference express dismay with Canada’s refusal to participate.

(Geneva April 20.09) Canadian civil society condemned Canada’s withdrawal from the Durban Review Conference (DRC) in a statement at the United Nations.

Speaking to the Preparatory Committee of the DRC today, Canadian civil society representatives denounced the shameful absence of the federal government from this important anti-racism conference.

Canadian anti-racism NGO’s and labour organizations are in Geneva advocating for measures to combat racism at international and national levels. In Canada, racism continues to be a harsh everyday reality for Aboriginal and racialized communities who suffer disproportionate levels of poverty, social exclusion, access to decent employment, and social services such as education, housing and healthcare. Too many aboriginal peoples must struggle for the most basic of human and environmental rights.

“African Canadians continue to struggle against anti-Black racism. We suffer high levels of poverty and hate crime victimization, criminalization and racial profiling.” said Margaret Parsons of the African Canadian Legal Clinic.

After 9/11, Arabs and Muslims were targeted for hate crimes and racial and religious profiling by overzealous security legislation. “Arab Canadians such as Mahar Arar, Abousfian Abdelrazik, have been marooned in their birth countries by our government. They have been subjected to torture and horrific human rights violations because of flawed anti-terrorism measures and willful political negligence “added Mohamed Boudjenane from the Canadian Arab Federation.

Karl Flecker the Human Rights Director for the Canadian Labor Congress said “The Canadian government should have been a part of this process. We consider the government’s shameful withdrawal nothing less than a failure to conform to its UN obligations. Fortunately civil society groups are here to share with the international community inputs designed to eliminate the pernicious grip of racism.”

The statement was endorsed by the following Canadian civil society groups:

Canadian Labour Congress
African Canadian Legal Clinic
Canadian Arab Federation
Metro Toronto Chinese and South East Asian Clinic
Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants
National Anti-Racism Council of Canada
Colour of Poverty
Karuna Community Services
Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (Canada)
...

Funding (Note how the same organisations keep popping up)

Canadian Arab Federation - needs no introduction, although I note that aside from Federal funding they also received 25K in 2008 from the City of Toronto.

African Canadian Legal Clinic - funded by Legal Aid Ontario

Metro Toronto Chinese and South East Asian Clinic - funded by Legal Aid Ontario

OCASI - Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants - OCASI believes that citizenship legislation should assert the principles of equity and fairness, by clearly stating that all citizens, NO MATTER HOW they acquired citizenship, have the same status. Uh huh. Largest single contributor in 2006 ( This is the most recent report available) - Citizenship and Immigration Canada $ 1,006,183

National Anti-Racism Council of Canada - primary funding Heritage Canada & Human Resources and Skills Development Canada No current finacial report available.
However -TORONTO, April 7, 2009 – The Honourable James M. Flaherty, Minister of Finance, today announced, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada federal funding of $103,140

Colour of Poverty - Funded by Heritage Canada. In addition to MTCSALC, the project is a joint effort of several organizations including: African Canadian Legal Clinic, Canadian Arab Federation, Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter, Hispanic Development Council, Midaynta Community Services, Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants, and the South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario (SALCO).

Karuna Community Services - Little information available other than on its former spokesman Michael Kerr, oh and one of it's primary activities is listed as Multicultural Food Catering!!!

Michael Kerr, seems well ensconced in the "poverty activist" industry, all the same names and associations keep poppoing up - Michael Kerr is a long-time community development worker and equity and human rights advocate currently serving as Coordinator of the Colour of Poverty Network of Ontario – having come into the Colour of Poverty initiative representing and serving as Coordinator with Karuna Community Services – a community development and social service volunteer network in the greater Toronto area. Having worked in a number of capacities with several newcomer settlement and refugee advocacy groups and organizations over many years, and been active if any number of equity, human rights and racial justice advocacy efforts and community-based campaigns - he most recently was the founding Coordinator for its first five years of existence of the National Anti-Racism Council of Canada - NARCC (2001-2006).

Ahmadinejad speech at Durban II

From Fars News Agency

Durban Conf. Participants Defuse Plot against Iranian President

...Following the incident, a minority of representatives from 23 organizations and states left the hall in protest of Ahmadinejad's speech. But thousands of others, including the United Nations representatives remained in the hall as Ahmadinejad continued, calling Israel a cruel and racist state and accusing Zionists of using the Holocaust as an excuse to steal Arab land.

Ahmadinejad also called Zionism a form of racism.

Those who remained in the hall expressed support for Ahmadinejad's ideas all throughout the speech.
...

Too funny if there were not a ring of truth to that last sentence.

Law and religious pluralism in Canada by Richard Moon

Reviewed by John von Heyking, Department of Political Science, University of Lethbridge

Richard Moon similarly asks why Christianity retains its influence when he ponders why the Court insists on treating religion as distinct from conscience: “if autonomy is the value that underlies our commitment to freedom of religion or conscience, then the freedom’s protection should extend equally to religious and non-religious beliefs and practices. Yet . . . religious beliefs and practices continue to be at the centre of the Canadian freedom-of-religion or conscience cases” (p.219). What accounts for the persistence of protecting a category of belief that, at least from the perspective of the state, does not differ from other categories (like the beliefs of agnostics, for instance)? Why single out religion for what seems like special protection?

People try to attack me and label me an anti-semite or racist, this kind of shit all the time- you know well what I mean – these kinds of allegations are always used by certain people in suppressing any kind of criticism towards Israel. My concern is about not getting into racial or religious issues because that is not my point. My point is called politics, imperialism, war for territory.

A modern day Tower of Babel...

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is set to tackle the thorny issue of whose story to include and whose to leave out -- a process that is causing controversy before it's even begun.

A massive white elephant in the making, the CMHR is yet another of Canada's "Useless things done with your tax dollars museums". Since our money is paying for this boondoggle and they are "consulting the public" I thought I'd offer a few exhibit suggestions.

How about:

The " Washroom Nazis" Diorama with a dedication by Bernie Farber and the Lying Jackal

Brother Nathaniel - Triumph against hate! A real cost saver - Brother Nathaniel brings his own stylized multiculty ethnic dancing and costumes ready made, besides he lives in a buick and could use the gig.

The "Smacking of foreheads - Holy Crap! I never thought they'd use the thought police law against us" exhibit - I envision an Escher style room for this one.

"The CHRC and the rule of law exhibit" It''ll be very small and hence won't cost much, unless of course we add my proposed inscribed wall noting each instance of Lucy Warman saying "I don't remember" 157 times while under oath.

By the same token, I am appalled by the sanctimonious social-policy-making of various human rights bodies across Canada, whose roles seem to have morphed from defenders of those unfairly treated in jobs and housing to advocates for anyone with a personal grievance, and on to thought police. Too Orwellian to bear.

Yet more douche-baggery from Warren Kinsella. The Jackal is upset at the Surly Beaver and has filed a law society complaint against him.

Soldier on Warren.

How can Michael Ignatieff continue to turn a blind eye to the antics of the "Human Shrapnel Machine"? Racist slurs against the Chinese, the attack on a leading Jewish advocacy group, his continued vendetta against free speech, the Jackal is a millstone. Rick McGinnis reviews: Doubt

The scene-setting is familiar enough. The postwar interregnum - that scant twenty years of apparent social stability between the end of a world war and the dawn of the '60s proper - is normally portrayed as a sort of Rome before the fall, a prosperous and orderly place rife with internal tension and besieged by enemies just over the borders in the wilderness beyond.

The metaphor isn't entirely appropriate, though - the barbarians weren't, we know now, out there in the forest.

You never know when Robert Fisk is telling the truth...

Much more revealing, however, was the long car journey I took next day across the frozen tundra of Canada during which two Muslim Canadian men – yes, yes, they had beards – explained to me just why their community was so silent about the iniquities perpetrated by their local dictatorships back home. I had suggested that they were rather too beholden to those regimes – for funding and political support. They agreed – up to a point.

"Mr Robert, you have to understand something," the driver suddenly said. "They have their 'mukhabarat' agents here in Canada. Whenever there is even a dispute between families, anyone who's angry can report back that his antagonist is anti-regime. We have to remember that we have families still in our Arab countries. They can be arrested. Or we can be arrested when we go back to visit them."

And so I began to learn what it is like to be an Arab Canadian.

Hmmmmm, of course the "Bad Muslims" are all in the employ of more or less "Western" client states. Well he's told half a truth here;)

The Jewish Family Romance

"...renegade Jews are always happy to become token Jews, showcased at antisemitic seminars, congresses and fora. They pose as sincere anti-Zionists, but their anti-Zionism is nothing more than a kosher antisemitism. They affect to be “antiracist”—the very movement kidnapped by anti-Zionists and used to demonize the Jewish state, permitting their antisemitism to, as it were, mingle with the guests. Consequently, reprobate Jews tend to transpose the fight against “injustice” to other peoples, reprehending not Palestinian terrorists but Israeli Jews themselves whose right to national legitimacy they perceive as an affront. In this way, they consolidate their fugitive merit."

Human Wrongs Commissions

The system itself is offensive to basic principles of justice. Despite the grandiose label of “human rights” under which it is conducted, it pretty much takes a blowtorch to the “Fundamental,” “Legal” and “Democratic” rights guaranteed by and enshrined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and makes a mockery of 400 years of legal protections built up through civil law.

Packed house for Levant, Shaidle, Mansur talk in London

Update: Natasha has photos.

The venue is listed at 600, the house is packed.

Here's Kathy....

Tonight’s question is: are Human Rights Commissions useful or obsolete? Something can’t be called “obsolete” if it was never “useful” in the first place.

It is commonplace to insist that the HRCs were a good idea at the time, but they’ve veered off course. Some present at the creation claim they never imagined the HRCs could have evolved into what they’ve become.

I’d argue that they were never a good idea in the first place, and that any precocious 12 year old who’d accidentally watched Truffaut’s Fahrenheit 451 on “Saturday Night At The Movies” could have foreseen what they would turn into.

The original mandate of the HRCs was to deal with discrimination in employment and accommodation.

A really embarrassing female politician asked Mark Steyn about one famous example of employment discrimination, when he recently testified at Queen’s Park about the HRCs and Section 13. She brought up the hoary old chestnut about signs in store windows that read NO IRISH NEED APPLY.

As Mark Steyn explained to this poor woman, because he’d read about it first on my blog, the real trouble with No Irish Need Apply signs is that they never existed.

Richard Jensen of the University of Illinois studied the issue and wrote:

QUOTE:

The fact that Irish American vividly "remember" NINA signs is a curious historical puzzle. There are no contemporary or retrospective accounts of a specific sign at a specific location. No particular business enterprise is named as a culprit. No historian, archivist, or museum curator has ever located one; no photograph or drawing exists.

The complete absence of evidence suggests that probably zero such signs were seen at commercial establishments, shops, factories, stores, hotels, railroads, union halls, hiring halls, personnel offices, labor recruiters, anywhere in America, at any time.

(...) However, the professor continues:

Irish Americans all have heard about these signs—and remember elderly relatives insisting they existed. The late Tip O'Neill remembered the signs from his youth in Boston in 1920s; Senator Ted Kennedy reported the most recent sighting, telling the Senate during a civil rights debate that he saw the signs when growing up.

END QUOTE

(And we all know how reliable Senator Kennedy’s accounts of his personal experiences can be.)

I’d be happy to speculate later on about what all that says about Irish psychology, but for now, let’s concentrate on the fact that the politician who confronted Mark Steyn with that would-be zinger merely showed herself to be terribly concerned about a hundred year old case of job discrimination that was completely make believe.

But then again, the Left draws most of its motivating energy from imaginary problems, like global warming, DDT, backalley coathanger abortions, and the chronic boredome of American housewives in 1950s suburbia. The Left is very concerned about something they like to call “social justice”, which I define as the stubborn application of unworkable solutions to imaginary problems.

Like Spinal Tap’s second drummer, who famously “choked to death on someone ELSE’s vomit,” Canadian leftists have always resented their neighbors in the United States for having a romantic, large scale Civil Rights Movement during the 60s and 70s.

So the HRCs became the Canadian Left’s state-sponsored version of the Woolworth’s lunch counter sit ins but, without the stirring LIFE magazine photos and crappy folk music soundtrack.

Going against that tide, in the US, Barry Goldwater bravely voted against the 1964 Civil Rights Act on principle.

As one author explained:

QUOTE

Most of the twenty-seven senators who voted against the Civil Rights Act were Southern segregationists. Goldwater was not a segregationist, nor was he any kind of racist. He was, in fact, a lifelong opponent of racial discrimination. He desegegrated his family’s department store back in the 1940s; he was a member of the N.A.A.C.P.

But Goldwater voted against the Civil Rights Act because he believed, as a conservative, that the federal government did not have the power to compel states to conform to its idea of racial equality, or to dictate to individuals whom they must associate with.

END QUOTE

Such “Love One Another Or Else” laws, from the Civil Rights Act to our own Section 13, inevitably bend under the pressure that other, higher, law: the Law of Unintended Consequences.

The fallout ranges from forced busing and white flight to those everyday resentments that simmer just below the surface as people cluster themselves into victim identity groups and complain about each other in whispers.

Human Rights Commissions were supposed to HELP the multicultural causes of tolerance and diversity. Instead, they pit groups against each other as they vie for favored victim status and the pitiful spoils that such status imparts.

Today, gay Canadians outnumber Muslim Canadians; when that balance shifts, and it will for obvious reasons, it will be interesting to see which side Canada’s liberal establishment decides to take, or is obliged to.

Again, the goal of the HRCs in particular and the Multicultural project in general were doomed from the start, because they contain the seeds of their own destruction, like a faulty gene in its DNA. You can have either tolerance OR diversity, but after a certain population mix is reached, you can’t have both.

The problem with the HRCs is most commonly presented as an issue of freedom of speech. However, I’d like to raise two additional aspects that don’t get as much play.

First, the HRCs are engaged in class warfare. The majority of “hate speech” cases are brought by highly educated, highly privileged white liberals -- against less educated, working class, blue collar “reactionary” whites, who insist on speaking to each other about topics like immigration, using old fashioned, politically incorrect language.

Therefore, the enforcement of Section 13 is an expensive exercise in state sponsored snobbery, in which people’s own hard earned tax dollars are used by their “betters” to scold and shame them. Worse, the process silences people who already feel linguistically, politically and educationally disenfranchised, angry and powerless. We often compare the tribunals to 1984, but to me they’re more like Pygmalion.

As British writer, Brendan O’Neill wrote:

QUOTE

Today’s Top-down ‘anti-racism’ has nothing whatsoever to do with ensuring equality of opportunity for all); rather it is about policing people’s behaviour and etiquette, especially amongst the lower classes. Accusations of ‘racism’ are no longer about indicting someone for their views on ethnic minorities but rather have become a snobbish judgment on their lack of breeding. ‘Racist’ has largely become code for ‘underclass’: uneducated, uncouth, thick, fat, ‘not one of us’.

Thus, the impact of official ‘anti-racism’ is not to make society more free and equal, but more authoritarian and censorious.

END QUOTE

So last year we all heard about the African American city councilor in the US who declared that the phrase “devils food cake” was racist.

And so it came to pass that Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner were murdered in Mississippi in 1964 so that almost 50 years later, a black man could not only vote but get elected to public office, only to feel compelled to comdemn the folkloric names assigned to chocolate pastries.

In Canada, meanwhile, a politician has been fighting a five year battle with the HRCs for using “racist” ink colours on a pamphlet.

The other problem rarely discussed in terms of the HRCs is that besides being an affront to freedom of speech, many cases violate the right to private property.

But conveniently enough, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms does NOT recognize the right to private property anyhow. Thank you, Ed Broadbent.

Canadians therefore had to endure the spectacle of, for example, a man claiming the “human right” to smoke marijuana on the premises of someone else’s restaurant. The difference between that and insisting on being served at a Woolworth’s lunch counter is only a matter of degree. Again, Barry Goldwater warned about this sort of thing but of course he was just an “insane” fascist right winger...

Then we have an imam with no capital investment or connection to Ezra’s magazine demanding the right to be published in its pages, presumably spelling mistakes and all.

And then the attempted hijacking of Canada’s oldest magazine by a gang of young Muslims, with Mark Steyn and Ken Whyte manning the drink cart.

I was pleasantly surprised that Ken Whyte and his crew fought back because, well, they’re Canadians. To continue the metaphor, I’ve often said that had United 93 been an Air Canada flight, the passengers would have held the cockpit door open for the terrorists -- then said “sorry” when they stepped on their feet.

Ezra likes to say that the HRCs and Section 13 are “unCanadian.” I respectfully disagree. I can’t think of anything more Canadian. They perfectly embody the Trudeaupian, Centennial celebration Canada I was born into.

I recently read Gerry Nicholl’s book Loyal to the Core, which I recommend highly, and was reminded of the many asinine rules against political speech that the NCC fought to overturn back in the 90s. Incidentally, some of the judges’ reasoning for retaining those laws make today’s HRC “judges” sound like Clarence Thomas.

Because the HRCs embody everything that is wrong with 21st century Canadian establishment culture, the only way to truly defeat them is by defying political correctness at every opportunity in our everyday lives. There will be no point fighting to abolish the HRCs and Section 13 if we are still too timid to say “Merry Christmas” at our place of work, or challenge the latest polticially correct terminology when our children bring it home from school. We complain about stupid, far away bureaucrats, but we would never have reached this point in the first place had the average Canadian not been too frightened, or unprincipled, or preoccupied, to allow them to flourish.

Warren Kinsella AKA The Lying Jackal forced to admit the truth

Todays Macleans article confirms what Warren Kinsella wished never had seen the light of day. The e-mails in which he threatened the Canada Israel Committee are real. Shimon Fogel of the CIC provided verification.

"And Kinsella’s lawyer served Maclean’s with a notice indicating that Kinsella had resigned from the Canadian Jewish Congress, where he had served as a volunteer–although Maclean’s hadn’t asked about Kinsella’s relationship with the CJC..."

As for his "resignation" from the Canadian Jewish Congress? Is that what they're calling it nowadays? After an e-mail exhange like that? Well if you say so Warren. Remember folks, even when the Jackal is telling the truth he's lying.

Now the question remains how can Michael Ignatieff tolerate working with an unprincipled liar like Warren Kinsella?

His story of the terrible abuse of power at the Canadian Human Rights Commission is a bone-chilling horror story. God help you if you get caught in its crosshairs, because if it investigates you, the ordinary rules of justice don't apply, including the normal legal protections for the accused.

After reading Shakedown I am embarrassed for not doing nearly enough to take up this cause when I was in government.

They rely on Section 13.1 of the Canadian Human Rights Act, which defines hate speech as “likely to expose a person or persons to hatred or contempt.” The formulation is so nebulous that it can be successfully applied against almost anything in print, which indicates that the tribunals are akin to kangaroo courts and show trials. There are always people, after all, ready to feel misprized by something they may happen to see, hear, or read. As a result, human rights are materially abrogated by Human Rights, rendered hollow by the very bodies created to uphold them.

My Dinner with the Sheikh

RightGirl and I had dinner with Sheikh Akrama Sabri (Imam of Alaqsa Mosque) and Bishop Attala Hanna this evening courtesy of Palestine House. The only thing deader than the rubber chicken served was any hope of Israel's survival should the shared vision of Hanna and Sabri ever reach fruition.

Repeated calls were made by the Shiekh for the liberation of "The Holy Land of Palestine" , as well as the "whole" of Palestine. This call was echoed by the Bishop who stated specifically that the only solution was "One Palestine" - a real crowd pleaser by the way. Israel was described as a non-viable state reliant for its existence upon violence and foreign military aid and merely a temporary occupation force within "Holy Palestine".

Shades of Ahmadinnerjacket: When the Palestinian state is established, and that day is coming soon we were assured, only those nations which sided against Israel would be among the favoured.

Huzzahs all round by the crowd when shout-outs were made to CAF and fellow travellers, Sid Ryan, CUPE and CUPW. The crowd was also pointedly advised that the pendulum has swung and they should be sure to vote Liberal as most grit party members now favoured the Palestinian cause over Israel - Yea Lying Jackal you read that right. Neither Jason Kenney nor PM Harper were favoured with a cheer when their names came up.

Liberal MP Paul Szabo, Liberal MP Bonnie Crombie, Omar Algabra and Carolyn Parish - Mississauga's next Mayor according to a local reporter covering the event, all being "that type of majority Liberal" were noted guests.

What was striking was listening to various of the speakers recite as if by rote all the Multi-Cult calling cards - diversity, shared "Canadian" values etc, close your eyes and you'd think Bernie Farber was MC'ing.
....

However the night wasn't all serious drama as this photo attests. Here, in a candid shot, we have Bishop Hanna Montana and some unnamed Arabs making fun of the Imam's sartorial style.

On Brigitte Gabriel and Free Speech....

Lumpy and or Grumpy has a good review of Ms. Gabriel's talk - Go Out Fighting

There is an old Arabic saying, First comes Saturday then comes Sunday. A soundbite frequently used by terrorist muslim organizations. Translation, first destroy the Jewish state then go after Christian nations.

Last evening I had the honour of listening to Brigitte Gabriel , recount her personal experience at the hands of murderous Islamists in a talk she gave for the CHW Toronto chapter as part of their "One Campaign".

During her talk she mentioned that PM Harper has had to intervene twice to ensure her entry to Canada - this was news to me. But I see from this Cair-Can press release that they hoped to have Ms. Gabriel denied entry to Canada in retaliation for the George Galloway brouhaha. Not two minutes later the audience was cheering the banning of Galloway. How odd. Censorship is good for business all round I am afraid and counter productive.

At any rate it was a great talk in support of a good cause. Ms. Gabriel reiterated a growing theme, it's time to take the gloves off and confront the threat posed by the Islamists and their supporters among the anti-semitic left head-on. Perhaps the most heartening event of the evening occurred during the Q&A session when a young man of Middle-Eastern extraction rose to tell the audience that he supported Ms. Gabriel's views and chose to attend her talk despite the personal risk of violence this entailed - violence that would be visited upon him by members of his own community should they learn of his prescence.
