Canadians have seen what happens when human rights tribunals wade into the waters of the Charter. They saw it with the debacles involving rulings about free-speech issues in the last few years; they should not even be given the opportunity to see what the results are when a tribunal presumes to rule on religious issues. Churches must be free to follow the tenets of their beliefs without undue outside interference. And a squabble over an altar server position is something that should be resolved by the parties sitting down to talk to each other and work something out, not by a quasi-judicial body that has no business there.

The Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario or, HURTO for short, in having accepted the complainants bizarre application rather than rejecting it outright, as is in their power to do, has signalled that they are willing to go ahead with this latest assault on Faith.
The complaint details a long list of Stalinesque "Show Trial" punishments that Corcoran wishes to inflict on Bishop De Angelis and the 12 parishoners, Stalinesque punishments that HURTO has at the very least condoned by accepting this vexatious nonsense.

I find it interesting that the overall opinion of multiculturalism changes so sharply once one crosses the border from Canada to the United States. In Canada, it is publicly taught that as a country we are a mosaic: a society that encourages the continuation of immigrants' cultures and values instead of accepting and adopting ours. It's taught in a rather objective tone that this is a "good" thing, and that the melting pot of the U.S. is out-dated and "bad". There, immigrants are free to chose any lifestyle they wish thanks to the first amendment, but are encouraged to adopt the American culture in order to work and live in the new country more smoothly.
Oppositely, Canada accommodates immigrants both socially and with taxpayer money. It appears to me that a good chunk of the American population recognizes they have a unique culture that's enjoyable and able to be proud of explicitly.

I have read your comments and partly understand your fear from immigrants and job competition. But let me explain that visa restriction is not solution to your problem. It may reduce number of succesful applicants from 1000 to 10 or 0 but also mean that normal tourists from CZ (including me) will go elswhere to spend their money they intended to spend in your country on holiday. Bear in minf that you must travel to Vienna for visa, you can not obtain it in Czech Republic at all !!!! Your government made an error in an effort to solve your problem. Right solution is to change your too naive immigration policy, to publish list of safe countries (I have no doubt Czech Republic will be on the list) and thus ensure that any refuge applicat from such country will be told off. Tourists will remain and false immigration will dissapear.
For yhose who does not agree, several questions :
1. Why do you think those people fly to Canada and do not move house freely to another "less racist" country within EU where they have (as EU citizens) right to live without restiriction ?
2. Where those people take the money for expensive fly tickets if they claim they are unable to get a job due to their race ?
3. Why 25 per cent of the applicants move back after few weeks after they found out that they have to wait too long and it is all less convenient that they have expected ? Authentic person who is afraid of their life would never do it.
Please, push your goverment to make your immigration policy more strict and do not punish tourists, your hoteliers, airlines and thus yourselves as taxpayers. Canada is too beautiful to be skipped from holiday plans :)

"Corcoran is seeking monetary damages of up to $25,000 from the bishop and $20,000 each from the 12 parishioners. But his primary interest is in restitution of a non-financial nature, he says. He states in his complaint that he wants the $20,000 from each of the parishioners to be allocated "towards a charity of my choosing." And the $25,000 from the diocese will be used to cover his legal expenses; but, he told LSN, he will be returning it through parish contributions.
He has also requested six other "remedies." First, he indicates that he "would like the group of 12 parishioners to be held accountable for their un-Christian actions, in front of their peers in a public forum, by the Bishop or the Bishop's superior." Second, he wants the Bishop to preach at his parish "on the consequences of practicing discrimination and the slanderous spreading of rumours, hate and innuendo."
Third, he wants to be restored as an altar server, and fourth, for the bishop to apologize for having removed him. Fifth, he wants the bishop to write an article for the diocesan newspaper "on the rights of persons with same sex attractions to practice their faith within the Catholic Church without fear of threats, recrimination or discrimination." And finally, sixth, he wants the diocese to develop policies "that support the human rights of all people within the church."

TORONTO, July 10, 2009 - The Catholic Civil Rights League commented today on the filing of a complaint with the Ontario Human Rights Commission against the Bishop of Peterborough for discontinuing the service of two homosexual men as altar servers at a parish church in the diocese.
According to a report published in the Catholic Register, Jim Corcoran brought the complaint after he was asked to give up his position as an altar server at Sunday Masses. Mr. Corcoran, who has acknowledged that he is homosexual, was relieved from those duties at St. Michael’s parish in Cobourg, Ontario.
Without commenting on any individual personnel situation or personalities that are involved in this case, the relationship between the Church and altar servers, in the League's opinion, has none of the attributes that would make it a subject for a complaint to the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal. No one serves on the altar as a right; it is at the discretion of the pastor, who in turn is at the service of his bishop. Mr. Corcoran’s role was not unlike that of other liturgical servers, who are part of the overall presentation of the Mass.
The decision about who can serve on the altar is a matter of Church governance. While the Church is subject to human rights law when it employs people in a commercial relationship, the same cannot be said about decisions involving who is a member, or how they can best serve.
The League hopes the Human Rights Tribunal will avoid an interference with the Church's governance in this matter. It should not place itself as an arbiter of canonical precepts.

The sheer irony of Mohsin Rashid’s July 4 opinion piece, "Burka or bikini: Let the women decide," left me dumbfounded. Do the women "decide" in Saudi Arabia? I think not. If I were to go there, I’d have to cover my head at least, and probably my whole body, to go out in public.
I have been to Europe six times in the last year and I can see the rise of racism against visible Muslims that parallels a suicidal effort by jihadis to flaunt their contempt for Western civilization and its values. Things are getting worse because two other segments of society that can help cool the situation are either silent or paralyzed by political correctness.
The first is secular and liberal Muslims, who form the vast majority of Europe’s Islamic community. They need to organize and confront the jihadis. Not for the sake of government grants and NGO funding, but for the sake of our future as equal citizens in the Western world.
The other group is the European and North American left, which has become a collective apologist for all things Islamist.

Three years ago, Jason Kenney -- then secretary of state for multiculturalism, now federal Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism -- says he met with the Czech and Slovak Association, who brought him to a small memorial for communism's victims they had built in a private Toronto park. Stephen Harper's response to Mr. Kenney, in a letter last year: "I would strongly support the idea of such a monument to recognize the 100 million people who died violent deaths under communist regimes, as well as those who escaped these totalitarian regimes to build new lives in Canada." He suggested it belonged near Ottawa's war museum, "ideally" to be unveiled in time for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, this November.

I wonder if you are familiar with this song? if you are, then you will agree that Mr. Shaban oughtta be known by the name 'punky' from now on (in order to subject him to maximum ridicule). if you've never heard it, I urge you to listen to the song. (caution: NSFW. also, do not listen to the song and look at omar shaban's picture at the same time).
