I was so sick of Arab beggars swarming me like flies that I put up the hood on my coat so I looked something like a mummy, even though it was August and 120f, suffocatingly hot. That slowed them down a bit, I say now, probably not then.
A kid, this one looking like a mini-version of Al Capone, no scar as yet, was out of control-begging, even when I grabbed his toy gun and tossed it across the street and threatened to smack him. He gave up on me the instant he spotted to old English ladies, like a couple from an Anthony Powell novel, walking past. He hit on them for money, pestering them till they nearly lost their British reserve in a big way: "I say!" No kidding, I reached for my revolver, hearing an English speak that line driving me to terror. The kid didn't speak English; and being a mini al-Capone, he was beyond fear anyway. He stared at the old ladies for a moment, then he loudly slapped his face and started howling in the street. I've never seen anyone reach for cash so fast as the old ladies, thrusting money at him like a hurricane. The kid has a stellar career in Euro-television awaiting him.
