In the main, it seems to me, Islam hasn't gotten there yet. Comparative history might suggest that Jesus provides a better model for anti-slavery movements than does Mohammed.
Even then, it's noteworthy that we look at the more recent history of American plantation slavery as a great evil, but when we look at the slavery in the West's founding civilizations, e.g. Athens, some thousands of years ago, we are much less inclined to see them as evil. Most people seem not to make a big deal about the widespread slavery in parts of the Muslim world - I guess they are just assuming that those people are still living in ancient cultural history.
There was a case a few years ago where a Saudi couple living in the US kept a slave. And when they were arrested and put on trial there were demonstrations in Saudi against the US disprespecting their culture.
