Karzai knows the infidel troops will soon be gone, and he will surely be killed along with anyone else that even looked at a coalition soilder. Now's the time to try and smooth things over by co-operating with them. It will do no good. Afghanistan is going to have its very own killing fields.
And we will be responsible. You can't fight a war unless you intend to win it. That means reconciling yourself to to the inevitable loss of innocent civilians. The winning of Hearts and Minds has its place but not on the battlefield. Ludicrous rules of engagement and the failure to plow Pakistan and Iran under for aiding the Taliban only add to this mess.

Agreed. I think the big failure in Iraq and Afghanistan was/is the ignorance of Islam and its history. An infidel democratic government was never, ever, ever going to fly in that part of the world. The idea that Pakistan, or Saudi Arabia are our allies shows just how deep this ignorance goes.

You would first need to know if the caught Taliban leaders being let go are known Pakistan ISI collaborators/stooges from powerful Pashtun tribes/clans or less aligned local guns for hire from their ancient enemies. Never seriously weaken the enemy of your main enemy even if they are a PITA nuisance in the meantime until you can collapse both.

I think the chi-cons see the light and realise that capitalism is raising their country out of poverty, but want to take it slow. Russia was a good lesson for them to study. We should have gone in harder, bombed more, secured the oil to pay for the war. Once their infrastructure matched the religion (7th C = 7th C)then we dictate what happens next.
That takes belief in winning, belief in democracy and a sense of how Western Civilization came about and that it is superior to other civilizations. The belief must be pervasive through out the political, military and societal channels. Unfortunately we are living in an upside world were PC is calling the shots.
If people rooted for Democracy like they root for the Green Riders and Notre Dame things would be much better today.
