Poetry is Poetency manifested itself in the form an alternative newspaper column during the 1980's, the closing decade of the Cold War. The link will take you to a blog entitled Breaking Borders. I have just opened this blog for the deposit of documents pertaining to art/poetic activities of the 1980's when the Peoples Republic of Poetry was engaged with elements within the Warsaw Pact countries.
By necessity, it was important to conceal much of what I will eventually expose on this blog. It has been 20+ years since the Cold War ended, so it seems safe now to display the some of the work and how it was secreted out of the Soviet bloc.. I will begin by posting the public domain polemics of my 'underground' activities, then some of the original samizdat and the stories behind them. It was an extension of the policy, Little Brother Watches Back, which manifested itself in this blog entitled Breaking Borders.
I highly recommend the illustrated story of TANGO, a samizdat publication of Polish poets/artists that arose in resistance to martial law and Soviet threats of repression. Their chief weapon was creativity, wit, and satire. Enjoy the read -- it makes an interesting contrast to the arts scene in Canada.

Earlier this week, with predictable aplomb, Bernie Farber-CEO of the Canadian Jewish Congress, published an Op-Ed piece in the National Post commemorating the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Equally predictable was his oft-repeated thesis that bad words led to the bad deeds of the Holocaust.
The time has come for right thinking Jews to repudiate this noxious and self-serving claim once and for all, and to permanently halt the use of the Holocaust as a tool for individuals and organizations to censor freedom of speech and ultimately, freedom of conscience and thought.
Mr. Farber’s piece was published in the same week that American broadcaster Rush Limbaugh was accused by Abraham Foxman of the Anti Defamation League, of being an anti-Semite. The two events may seem unrelated at first, but actually do form a distinct and unconscionable pattern within the Jewish communal world. It is a result of the fact that the most prominent and vocal Jewish organizations around the world today are primarily liberal organizations, merely run by people who were born Jewish. Their agendas are not particularly Jewish, but jive coincidentally quite well with most “progressive” social activist tendencies.
Time after time, when Jewish “leaders” resort to their default position on hate speech and fatuous accusations of anti-Semitism, I am called upon by my exasperated pro-Israel gentile friends to explain why these “leaders” seem so hell bent on alienating them with their knee-jerk anti-Christian biases and their frankly completely un-Jewish moral support of censorship-such as the Canadian Jewish Congress’s support of the CHRC “Hate Speech” and other “Hate Crime” legislation.
Some of these “leaders” are Holocaust survivors, and some are children of survivors. Many are Jewish only in name, and use their Jewish-sounding names to invoke a certain sense of kindred, or communal values even while aligning themselves with the issues of the most marginal importance to the Jewish community. Indeed, barely a month after the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner by yet another Muslim terrorist, and several months after the worst jihadist terror attack on North American soil since 9/11 at Fort Hood, Mr. Farber puzzlingly turns his organizational focus once again back to Darfur, Rwanda, Kosovo and Cambodia.
The road from Auschwitz to the jihad against Jews and western civilization is a clear drive from Haj Al Amin Husseini to Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, Nasrallah and Saudi Wahabism-but liberal Jews seem ever more unable and unwilling to traverse that moral ground.
Why?
It is easier to fight the war that was essentially already won. Although reprehensible, it is easier to wrap oneself up in a pseudo Jewish identity entirely based on the Holocaust than to invest the intellectual capital required to understand our current enemies and the threat facing our civilization. It takes a bigger investment in time and thought to study and understand the real, underlying message of Jewish living-“to life”, “/l’chaim/”, and being a Light Unto the Nations. Not by liberal activism under a superficial cloak of Judaism, but through celebrating life, and the commandments given to us by G-d passed on throughout the generations of Jewish history.
It is easier to frame one’s nominally Jewish life in familiar, au courant fashion such as “social justice” and “/tikkun olam/” (‘repairing the world’) rather than struggle intellectually and morally the real dangers facing us today.
The real danger facing the Jewish people, and the civilized world is not Nazi words-it is deeds; beheadings, suicide bombings and highjackings with the umbrella name of “jihad”. Furthermore, it is morally and intellectually dishonest to point to insulting words as the root cause of the Nazi dehumanization of Jews.
It was the disassembling of Jewish civil liberties and civil rights that began the downward spin toward hell on earth. The descent began when Jews were stripped by the state of their rights to own property and businesses. Their physical property and humanity were legally expropriated. When the state took away the Jews’ freedom to marry whom they chose, and when the state legally defined the Jews as less than human, the descent was unstoppable.
If today, someone calls me a dirty Jew, I care very little-and frankly don’t need the state to fight my battles. If suddenly, in Canada or America, the state were to suddenly decide that because we are Jews, that we are not legally entitled to own property or that we are no longer legally full humans, equal under the law, then, Houston, we would have a problem and civilized, western societies such as ours would reject the state’s totalitarian, antisemitic plans.
Ironically, it is Jewish liberals like Bernie Farber and Abe Foxman who share a profound sense of cognitive dissonance about the role of the state in protecting Jews. The Nazi state and its laws enabled the dehumanization of Jews-not words and insults. Concentrated, dictatorial legislative powers were Hitler’s best weapon and were among the Nazis most profoundly and rapidly absorbed anti-Jewish functions within German society.
It is therefore incumbent upon us to realize that it is not work that makes us free.
Freedom makes us free.
And there are many among us, Jews and gentiles alike, who will continue to resist even the slightest, /almost/ imperceptible incursions into our personal liberties: speech, thought and conscience among them – even when made with the most noble of intentions and ostensibly to honour the dead.

Perhaps you should have "factchecked" that before puffing yourself up like the frog in the fable to accuse me of character assassination. What that does tell me though is that YOU think it is bad form to accuse someone of being rude, obstreporous and bold and to get yourself suspended from school, while Ms Z thinks it is something to boast about. I will let you two work that out for yourselves. So much for your opening salvo.
My comments about Antonia's writing are absolutely correct and I stand by them. She is an extremely banal writer - I should know - I edited a writing competition for high school students for 25 years, and I promise you the Grade 9 students who made the cut for the finished anthology all wrote much better than Antonia. So you can imagine my pique when I saw that AZ considered her writing similar to mine. Ye gods, perhaps when I'm in the final throes of Alzheimers but not before. Her writing skills are mediocre and her thoughts are rain puddle shallow and Manchurian Candidate-like robotic. If there were some money in it, I would be prepared to prove my point by deconstructing some of her colunns; trust me, she would not be a happy camper when I was finished with her. As for the Toronto Star, I have a friend who teaches newcomers English and she only uses the Toronto Star as a teaching tool because, as she put it, "the writing is so simple and easy for immigrants to read."

As a matter of routine the CHRC accepted "evidence" gained through means rightly described as entrapment, withheld evidence and documentation from complainants, ignored their own stated procedures and conducted "investigations" according to instruction from complainants rather than as an independent objective body, further CHRC staff routinely joined Neo Nazi web sites and have been caught registering for and one presumes investigating sites against which no formal complaints have been filed, have succumbed to undue influence as a result of regulatory capture by politically driven individuals and special interest groups, run roughshod over the right to freedom of religion & freedom of the press, all the while subjecting their victims to a punishing one sided abuse of our democratic legal traditions... and the beat goes on - they hope.

I read With the Old Breed over Christmas and highly recommend this memoir. What started out as private account intended only for family was shaped over the course of twenty years into a riveting read. Crittenden also mentions "Helmet for my Pillow" by Robert Leckie. I read Leckie's account immediately after Old Breed and frankly couldn't wait to put it down. I found it instantly forgettable, in large part due to Leckie's overblown, (if not outright pompous), style which pales next to the sense of intimacy and credibility conveyed by Sledge's spartan delivery. Reading "Helmet" was a bit like watching the "The Thin Red Line", you soon "get" the idea that you're supposed to be impressed that every damn swaying palm is somehow vested with a deep mystical meaning. This wears thin after the first 30 times or so, or about page 10 as I recall.
I do recommend "Parachute Infantry" by David Kenyon Webster. Fans of "Band of Brothers" will recognize the name. Webster died young and unable to find a publisher willing to take on what is an often acidic account of his WW II experience. Thanks to Stephen Ambrose, Band's author, his manuscript finally saw print. Webster's account of his time in Easy Company is refreshingly not a hagiography, rather it offers unvarnished glimpses of many of the officers, noncoms, enlisted men & events now so widely familiar and introduces us to others passed over in more popular books.
What I found especially interesting were the "letters home". Webster was very much a product of his time and place. A well-bred Harvard man, respectful & proud of his parents, family and country, he was burdened by what he perceived as the ill treatment of the common man by his "society". He became a "traitor to his class" democrat, albeit with strong concerns about Roosevelt's more radical policies. These issues did not prevent him from excitedly casting his first ever ballot for FDR when ironically he came of legal voting age on the battlefield, having already earned that right in the campaigns of Normandy and Holland. Conflicted on many fronts, whether about the war, the army, politics or life in general his decency and a growing sense of self emerge. Never once did he attempt to leverage his social standing or connections. His sense of duty, combined with an english major's youthful fantasy to live a "writers life" compelled him to volunteer for the parachute infantry rather than take an easy, and easily available, way out.
A letter to his mother displays the self-righteous indignation young men possess when decisively winning an argument with a parent. I wonder if looking back Webster ever regretted being so harsh in accusing her of wanting to win the war by sacrificing the life of every mother's son save her own. Some arguments should never be won by cold reason if it can be avoided. An interesting read of themselves his letters reveal the marked and often poignant contrast between the voice of the author as a man and the son on the road to manhood. TORONTO, January 15, 2010 – B’nai Brith Canada questions the wording and intent behind a fatwa against terrorism that was undersigned by a group of North American imams. The recently-issued fatwa, which states that “any attack on Canada and the United States is an attack on the freedom of Canadian and American Muslims. Any attack on Canada and the United States is an attack on thousands of mosques across North America,” was spearheaded by Syed Soharwardy, the president of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada (ISCC).
Soharwardy and his organization have a track record of disseminating antisemitic and anti-Western sentiment. Although a lot of the disturbing material has been removed from the ISCC’s website, thanks to the probing efforts of Ezra Levant, B’nai Brith was able to acquire archived copies of the offending articles and statements.
“The fact that this fatwa limits itself to terrorism in North America and predicates its anti-terror positions on the damaging effects of terrorism only on the Islamic community is quite concerning,” said Frank Dimant, B’nai Brith Canada’s Executive Vice President. “Is the fatwa implicitly saying that terrorism directed against India, Spain, the U.K., Israel, and Canadian forces in Afghanistan is somehow permissible?

We were disgusted when we read some of the virulent antisemitic and anti-Western ravings that were posted to his organization’s website – some trivialized the Holocaust, others prophesized the extinction of the Christian faith, and still others went so far as to speak of a ‘slaughter’ and ‘annihilation’ of Jews.
“What Canadians would truly like to see is for reputable imams within the Islamic community to stand up and denounce all acts of terrorism irrespective of where they occur and who the targets are. And if Imam Soharwardy wants his fatwa to be taken seriously, he needs to publicly reconcile it with the anti-Christian and antisemitic ravings that have appeared on his organization’s website.”
