Tarek Fatah cancelled a sheduled debate against Imam Sheharyar Shaikh this evening citing security concerns and a failure to find a mutually agreed upon moderator. See the press release for details.

News of Fatah's cancellation was greeted by by cheers of Allahu Akbar by a segment of the moderate muslims in attendance.

The event drew a significant and ultimately disappointed crowd, including yours truly.  A strong police presence was evident.

Tarek is offering his version of events, including claims of threats against MCC members on his Facebook page - see jpeg.

Update: Dr. Roy was there and his report up now.

NAMF Produces Triumphalist Video I have a Good news and I have a Bad news... h/t Saratoga

MuniMula  – (7:55 PM)

Holy cow! It was like a trap. He was very wise to avoid it.

Blazing Cat Fur  – (7:59 PM)

Well it may have been. A lot of people are questioning the veracity of his stated concerns. I have heard a number of contradictory statements concerning the issue of video cameras as well as security, there were alot of police around.

sanwin  – (8:01 PM)

Were you there ?

I didn't see you around.

Shaik is a smooth taqiyaa master, isn't he ?

Blazing Cat Fur  – (8:10 PM)

I was but I did not stay for the aftermath, had to drive someone home as well. Lumpy should have a good post up soon I hope and Dr. Roy was there.

sanwin  – (8:13 PM)

I saw Dr. Roy leave pretty early.

saratoga  – (8:14 PM)

I'm happy he didn't go but as a courtesy to his fans he might have let them know.through face book or his blog .Looks like he played the crowd too.

Blazing Cat Fur  – (8:36 PM)

He upset alot of people.

=======

how about this.. create a law that lets citizens call a 'grand jury' for other citizens..

Sure beats appointed political justices...

saratoga  – (9:16 PM)

So they went on with a frigging monologue? bizarre

simus  – (9:22 PM)

Perhaps I can channel the canceled debate.

"I am the best muslim. He is an apostate. True believers must kill him and his infidel paymasters before the next sunrise."

Moderator: "Okaaaaaay. Let's move on to audience questions, the masked gentleman in the front row holding the sword, do you have a query for the good muslim or the filthy apostate?"

Roz  – (9:48 PM)

Unless I am not understanding something, Tarek could have posted something to let the public know he would not be showing up. I am positive, like myself, people could have made other plans iso driving all the way out to S'boro to hear about a no-show...

Blazing Cat Fur  – (10:00 PM)

There was quite a crowd there tonight, alot of people drove across town oh well, I suppose Syed Soharwardry's remarks have caused him grief.

Revnant Dream  – (2:25 AM)

IF this dosent prove there are no moderate Muslims , nothing will. How can you argue against a book that is based on murder, pillage, slavery with Misogyny as rational to the point of mutilation or honor killing, let alone from God.
No Golden rule there.

Durotrigan  – (3:46 AM)

"Allahu Akbar". Hmm. Don't hear that one often (except perhaps in the House of Lords these days).

Well, you may be interested to learn that Lord Ahmed (a former Rotherham fish and chip shop owner once sentenced for killing a man in a head on collision whilst texting) has today stepped forward to defend Muslim paedophile gangs in the UK, and has turned the blame for their crimes upon English women: http://durotrigan.blogspot.com/2011/01/lord-ahmed-defends-muslim-predatory.html

been around the block  – (9:52 AM)

Cross-posted at Dr. Roy's:

OK, so who was the replacement moderator? No mention of his/her name. Was it Pastor Neil Bulloch whose photo appears here? 'No mention of who he is.

I'm sorry, but I can't help detect the irony in the first moderator's name: Dr. Mock. She ducked out too.

Is there any way Islam can be discussed these days without becoming a mockery?

As for the topic of debate, "Does Secular Liberalism Exemplify the Qur'an and Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him)?", the obvious answer is "NO." So, where's the debate? Why a debate of this topic in the first place? It's a forgone conclusion what the answer is, no matter what side of the debate you're on.

I'm beginning to think that Westerners and Muslims live in two separate realities, between which there seems to be no meeting point between Western democratic freedoms and strict observance of Islam, a 7th-century religion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G53PNlRo8aA -- raw footage fatha is doing damage control on his site??

sanwin  – (11:28 AM)

I stayed for the whole debate.

Two things I observed.

The first 15 minutes of the speech by Shaikh were spent running down Tareks books, how this was related to the debate and allowed by the half dead moderator is beyond me.

Secondly a large part of the speech was spend wisrtfully speaking of how wonderful it would be if sharia law came to Canada, how it would be imposed on non muslims if the majority desired it, etc.

Farooq also said he had email evidence about why Karen Mock did not show up , he would reveal them since they were 'an open organizaton' but of course he did no such thing.

Finally our friend Jawed Anwar was at the door handing out flyers advertising his hste site themuslim.ca. I almost broke out in laughter when I took one from him.

Blazing Cat Fur  – (11:35 AM)

Thanks Sanwin, I had already been at the Egypt Rally and literally dashed across town to attend the debate. Sorry I missed that but I had to give a lift to a friend and no one including me had the stomach to sit through that, I should have on retrospect though.

Wild about that Janjaweed guy;)

sanwin  – (11:52 AM)

If you google `Neil Bulloch` you will find that this `moderator` has a long history of involvement with Shaikh.

I am beginning to think this last minute change wasn`t so accidental after all.

Roz  – (12:07 PM)

@Sanwin: Pastor Bulloch referred to Tarek Fatah as his "friend" when I Googled his name. Just wondering if indeed Tarek was a friend of his and if so, there should have been no problem of who the new "moderator" was.

http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=Bulloch++NAMF&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=

Bulloch and Shaikh and the NAMF have worked together before.

He`s not an unbiased individual.

Roz  – (12:22 PM)

Oy vay, Sanwin! You are right! I am eating my words! They do not taste yummy:(

sanwin  – (12:35 PM)

LOL !

No evil intentions were present Roz !

Doesn't  – (6:37 PM)

I like questions one guy from the audience asks in the beginning of part five (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZD5Xwri-F0). Shaikh tries (unsuccessfully) to do some damage control and to mud the waters. Nevertheless, he doesn't condemn the killing of apostates or blashphemers, he seems to be quite for it.

Paul  – (6:58 PM)

I'm neither a friend nor foe of TareK.

But he is an interesting character study of a very confused Muslim. (as I mentioned once before.)

Odd though, the women in his organization seem to have more testicular fortitude than he obviously possesses and for my money, a better debate would have been with any one of them.

(At least they would have showed up. - It's not like Tarek didn't know the big hate was on; so I really don't get it what all the fuss he's been making is about.)

I do know that in the past he got anonymous death threats, so to be fair maybe he lost it and changed his mind as a result of something he's not saying.

But then again, why toss your hat in the ring if you're not ready to anticipate a worst case scenario and deal with it?
