The police simply wish to get him out of the jails, wash their hands of it so they don't have to actualy kill him themselves. given 2-6 weeks after his release, unless he is wisked out of country within 72 hours, his life is finished.
So I wonder, do athiests now realise that just not believing in God does not garantee their safety, rather it increases the threat to their lives, even more than Jew's, and Jew's are at the top of the islamic kill list.

He meant the miraculous conversion, from publicly stating he did not believe in God, to Publicly stating he now believes in Allah - it's not going to save his life, which one could reasonably assume is why he 'converted'.
